Objective: Create a surreal, or dreamlike, clay sculpture expressed through imagery, form, & textures.

Research & Studio:

3. Sketch your own SURREAL DESIGN from all angles, larger scale & detailed on back of handout, print out 2+ pictures for reference while creating with clay, & turn-in for credit.

RBHS Unity Week | Talk about it Tuesday!


Kara Walker is a contemporary African American artist who lives and works in New York City. She creates art installations (spaces) covered with life size black silhouettes of people at play, visually dancing across the walls of a room at high contrast. She crosses the beautiful with the grotesque showing ornate human figures from around the turn of the 20th century, making a statement about slavery and the role of her culture in American history.

design objective: Work collaboratively to create an creative, well crafted, and functional 3x3x3 foot chair out of cardboard that supports 20 lbs. or more!

process: Research different chair designs, print out pictures for reference, create a maquette (small model) or design, and then fabricate your chair out of cardboard!

tromp l'oeil art

Objective Create a clay sculpture that expresses your style and interest in the arts through imagery, color, form, & texture in a TROMP L’OEIL SCULPTURE. This form should be inspired by a piece of MUSIC, DRAMA, DANCE, or VISUAL ART of your choice by recreating an existing object related to the work.

PART I | Research & Sketches
  1. Follow handout & blog to brainstorm & record insterdisciplinary artworks you want to inspire your sculpture.
  2. View Piet Mondrian and Stuart Davis' music inspired paintings and Pastmatters? audio installation by Suzanne Bartelson for ideas about combining visual art with music, dance, & drama.
  3. View links below, complete worksheet, & print out multiple views of the object you will make out of clay!
EXTRA TIME? Look up tromp l'oeil artists Paul Day, Dan Anderson, Richard Shaw, Tip Toland, Ron Mueck, Duane Hanson, & Judy Fox.

PART II | Ceramics Studio
1. Build solid form with clay. Try to work LIFE SIZE… so use a small object!
2. Allow clay to become leather hard and either:
  a. CUT IN HALF, DIG OUT INSIDE, REATTACH, & POKE A HOLD
  b. DIG OUT FORM FROM UNDER SIDE OF SCULPTURE
3. Sculpt & add detail. Make creative choices to execute an expressive & well crafted design.
  a. Give the object a STORY. What happened to it? Is it functional? Add another object to give more of a narrative to this scenario.
4. Carve initials on bottom & turn in uncovered to be fired in the kiln.

PART III | Painting Studio – Apply acrylic paint and mixed media for a finished realistic sculpture!
